Elizabeth Hurley and her husband Arun Nayar have settled an unfair dismissal lawsuit filed against them by their ex maid, who claimed she was paid just $2.40 (€1.63) an hour.
31-year-old Violet D'Souza worked for the couple since 2003 after Arun brought her back from India to live with them in London. Violet worked 7 days a week starting at 7:30am and usually going until 3 the next morning. The generous Elizabeth and Arun would usually pay her a whopping 8,000 rupees ($200) a week. That's between $2.72 and $3.10 an hour.
Hurley's personal fortune is estimated at $26m (€34.5m), while business tycoon Nayar comes from a wealthy Indian family with a background in the textile industry. So why the hell are these two bitches paying their maid pennies?They made her do everything from cooking and cleaning to taking care of their children. She was suddenly fired last year after falling out with her employers. D'Souza went to seek help from local Citizens Advice Bureau lawyers following the sacking and filed for minimum wage and earnings owed under UK law.
Just so you know, in Britain, the legal minimum wage is $11.04 (€14.60) an hour. I should go work there!
The Daily Mirror says that d'Souza withdrew her claims after she was given a five-figure settlement.
